The Craft of Unviolence

Created during the Student's Biennale, supported by Kochi Biennale Foundation. This project is an attempt to document dialogues and celebration – of unity and identity among marginalized communities during and after the anti-CAA and NRC protests that broke out in several parts of India post 13 December 2019. Many memories are evoked through the process of sharing, and the conversations continue and remain relevant until the present time. Our work is about inscribing personal as well as collective memories on shawls, by working collaboratively with women who have actively or silently participated in the protests. They constitute a set of collective memoirs that commemorate the celebration of coming together. Collaborating with them through the traditional process of zari, embroidery and beading, we attempt to engage in other conversations as well, and to address a range of issues within the socio-political fabric.
